Today was a beautiful day to get outside and enjoy the nature here! I well exceeded my goal of a 20 minute walk!

I have been taking 5 minute showers since this challenge began and I have realized how much unnecessary time I spend wasting water.

    Nature Join An Outdoor Project
How well do you know the area you stay in -- whether your hometown or your campus community? In what ways is a deep knowledge of your surroundings -- known as a 'sense of place' -- important to you?

Through my almost three years on campus I have been able to really get to know Potsdam, the community and the environment. I have explored the campus woods and ventured into the Adirondack region. I have gained an appreciation for the nature of this area. Additionally, I have made sure to become an active member of the campus community, through sustainable projects, as well as an active member of the greater town community. Together with the Potsdam Climate Smart Task Force, I have helped the town with their goal of becoming a sustainable community. This campus, town, and environment that I have become a part of is very important to me today. I have learned how impactful one person can be on a community, and how greatly a group of individuals can enact real change.

    Simplicity Limit Social Media
Social media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?

After reducing my social media for a couple of days now I have experienced a change in my mood especially going to sleep. I often go on my phone for over a half an hour before bed. I have cut that out of my daily routine and it has helped me relax before going to bed. While I do like to see all the good happening on social media, I tend to get more stressed at night while on social media. Another thing I am doing is blocking and limiting negative content I see on my social media. I am excited to see how I feel after a month of limiting my social media!

    Nature Support Local Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

Pollinators are a key component in our ecology. Bees, birds, butterflies, and more sustain all of the plants that provide us with food and beauty. It is important to provide a diverse number of plants for all types of pollinators. I started the germination process of lavender which is a great plant to attract butterflies and bees.

Simplicity Go For A Daily Walk Outside
Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

I try to get outside and go for a walk in the Clarkson woods a couple times a week. But this month I am aiming for every day, taking a walk around campus, through the woods, or downtown. I always feel recharged after I get some fresh air. When I am feeling stressed about all the work I have to do, taking a walk gives me the energy to come back and finish the work I need to. Walking also helps me get sleep at night so I am recharged for the next day!

    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Maya Cliffe's avatar
    Maya Cliffe 3/31/2021 8:17 AM
One reason that richer countries eat more meat is due to the high cost of producing meat. Many underdeveloped countries have a plant based diet because it is easy to grow food in your own yard. Meat consumption plays a big role in global greenhouse gas emissions. Ruminant animals, such as cattle, produce a lot of methane adding to global warming. One way you can help is by decreasing your meat consumption, or eliminating it entirely.

    Food Plant an Herb Garden
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

I am currently in a dorm room on campus so the best place for an herb garden will be my windowsill. I am going to get a small windowsill container to plant some herbs in and get some greenery in my room (along with my succulents).
