Sam's actions
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 20 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Nature
Do Nature Activities
I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 30 minute(s) each day. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)
Energy
Heat and Cool Naturally
I will naturally heat and cool my house, office, or dorm room by opening or closing my windows, curtains, and blinds, and by using fans.
Health
Know My health
I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Food
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Water
Meaningful Watershed Experience
I am taking an 8 week long course on how to institute a Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience at the high school level. The course is being taught by Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
Simplicity
De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
I will de-clutter, clean, and donate or recycle unneeded items in my home or dorm room.
Simplicity
Disconnect from Email
I will disconnect from my email when not at work or school, using my personal time for endeavors that help me live out my values.
Nature
Join An Outdoor Project
I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community while observing best practices in my region for not spreading COVID-19.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of plants and trees at my home or work.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 60 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Mulch the Base of Trees and PlantsWhere are your nearest natural bodies of water? How might they be affected by runoff?
Sam Moyer 4/19/2021 8:33 AMThe Yellow Breeches is close to me so if there is a lot of runoff from salt on the roads or fertilizers from lawns, field and farms, it can have a pretty large impact on the trout (and other fish) that call that water home. Eutrophication and lower dissolved oxygen can have drastic impacts on the plant and animal life that rely on that water! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Sam Moyer 4/19/2021 8:31 AMI mentioned in an earlier post that Terracycle accepts A LOT of plastic wrapping, packaging, and other materials that CANNOT go into our curbside recycling. Many Terracycle programs are FREE to participate in. One less wrapper finding its way into the waterways, land, or landfill really can make a difference. Electronics can be recycled by Computer Barn and by Claremont Nursing Home. Additionally, Giant will take back all plastic bags! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Join An Outdoor ProjectHow well do you know the area you stay in -- whether your hometown or your campus community? In what ways is a deep knowledge of your surroundings -- known as a 'sense of place' -- important to you?
Sam Moyer 4/19/2021 8:29 AMIt's vital to understand the inter-connectedness between what we do in our daily lives and the impact it can have on our surroundings. Understanding the various waterways in our area, for example, is important since what we do in Carlisle eventually impacts the Chesapeake Bay! Understanding this concept can help to appreciate our community even further and protect it better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Sam Moyer 4/15/2021 3:47 PMIt's hard at times to see how global a problem can be when we focus in on a smaller lens of the world (our home, our school, or our community, etc... versus the PLANET!)
My overall consumption has drastically reduced in size over the last couple of years, and I focus on plastic free packaging and plastic free products! -
REFLECTION QUESTION

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Sam Moyer 4/15/2021 3:32 PMI think being creative allows you to repurpose and reuse items you wouldn't have thought to do so, otherwise! Instead of BUYING something, take some time to CREATE something with items you already have in your house that would either go unused or be placed in the landfill! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Do Nature ActivitiesWhat did you observe while spending time outside -- through sight, sound, smell and/or touch?
Sam Moyer 4/15/2021 3:28 PMI think spending time outside is good for the head, heart, and overall health! It destresses, declutters your thoughts, and forces you to disconnect from tech! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Sam Moyer 4/15/2021 3:00 PMA lot of houses are starting to place solar panels to offset electricity consumption. During the winter, I see a lot of chimneys working over time, particularly during the snow and cold days! Generally speaking, I would assume fossil fuels are still in the lead with generating electricity.
