I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water a day or 270 (1,020 L) gallons of water a month per faucet.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Eco-friendly Gardening

I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.

COMPLETED

We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.

COMPLETED

Has anyone else seen this?  It provides a ton of information to help us become better stewards of Earth.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Personal Waste Audit
Why is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?

    Jennifer Teeple's avatar
    Jennifer Teeple 4/18/2021 5:13 PM
I do not think we see what we throw away when it's one thing at a time or all fits in the trash can. I has made me aware of how much non recyclable trash we used. I will be more aware going forward
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

    Jennifer Teeple's avatar
    Jennifer Teeple 4/18/2021 5:06 PM
There are some companies that will mail you a box to put your recycling in but there is a center in Harrisburg that takes everything
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

There is one in Bridgeton Mo. After the landfill went in home prices dropped. It had an for burning for years because of tires.

I appreciate all of my coworkers embracing this challenge.  CCM really cares about the environment.  It is nice to see that it is not just a company stance but everyone sees it as a personal responsibility too.

I have to agree, as it is one thing to preach, another thing to practice and I am seeing a corporate philosophy backed by employees that feel empowered.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?

    Jennifer Teeple's avatar
    Jennifer Teeple 4/14/2021 9:42 AM
We get straws a lot since we do not cook much.  We have metal and silicone straws for use at home though.  We have washable bags for produce.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

    Jennifer Teeple's avatar
    Jennifer Teeple 4/14/2021 9:41 AM
We stopped using disposable water bottles a few years ago.  Occasionally if we are out and cannot refill the water bottle we are forced to buy plastic ones.  We always recycle when we can.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater
How do you think climate change will affect your region’s water supply? Think about the effects of weather, storms, salinity, and sea level rise, among other changes. How can you find out more about climate change’s impact to your region's water?

    Jennifer Teeple's avatar
    Jennifer Teeple 4/14/2021 9:39 AM
If sea level continues to rise the water tables that we depend on could become contaminated with sea water making it unusable for drinking, watering crops and other general uses.  The Global Climate change initiative has numerous publication that we can read to learn about climate change and how we can help.
