  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

    Kenneth Slaysman's avatar
    Kenneth Slaysman 4/13/2021 10:52 AM
The landfills are located in relatively rural areas. THese are sparsely populated but also tend to be lower income areas.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Who is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?

    Kenneth Slaysman's avatar
    Kenneth Slaysman 4/12/2021 3:29 PM
The people most affected are those without voices in the process. The young, the marginalized, the elderly, those who have given up.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Joyful Movement
What's your favorite activity(ies) in which you experience joy while being active and moving?

    Kenneth Slaysman's avatar
    Kenneth Slaysman 4/12/2021 11:22 AM
Hiking, bouncing on my grandchildren's trampoline and swimming are among my favorites.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

    Kenneth Slaysman's avatar
    Kenneth Slaysman 4/11/2021 10:25 AM
I found a place to recycle electronics, tires and used motor oil in my community. It is true that opportunities ebb and flow so the best solution is to reduce.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Meet My Local Farmers
When you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? How can knowing their food producers enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?

    Kenneth Slaysman 4/10/2021 4:22 PM
Knowing where my food comes from gives me a sense of confidence about the quality of my food and it makes me feel like I'm connected to the process of providing my food. Since it becomes personal I have more of a stake in advocating for my local farmers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Tend a Garden

By being mindful. By being patient in making purchase decisions - no snap judgements. No impulse buying!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

    Kenneth Slaysman's avatar
    Kenneth Slaysman 4/01/2021 3:51 PM
I typically get 8 hours of sleep a night but I would like them them to be more consistent. Like asleep by 10 and up at 6. In an academic setting my pattern tends to shift depending on whether we are on break on in session.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Kenneth Slaysman 3/30/2021 4:20 PM
In Pennsylvania the Department of Environmental Protection issues fish advisories. In the most recent advisory we are warned not to eat fish from the Shenango River. I'm good on this guideline. To make sure I stay safe I should check the DEP advisories regularly.
