Food Try a New Way to Prep
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

    Alaina Rogers's avatar
    Alaina Rogers 4/21/2021 8:47 AM
I have never personally preserved food by canning or pickling, but canned  tomatoes and green beans, as well as pickled ginger and beets fill my grandparents' pantry. I have preserved foods in other ways such as freezing blueberries or strawberries after picking them at a farm.

What makes you feel connected to your campus, your neighbors, or another kind of community in your life?

    Alaina Rogers's avatar

Friendship, teamwork, gratitude, and harmony help me feel connected to any kind of community. I think that peaceful coexistence with others is key in any community and necessary for success.

How might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?

    Alaina Rogers's avatar
    Alaina Rogers 4/21/2021 8:29 AM
Studies show that spending more time outdoors can enhance memory by 20%, in addition to improving cognitive function. I have also personally discovered that spending time outdoors causes a sense of  inner peace, and nature has forever been a therapeutic escape for me. Our society spends a large amount of our time on electronics, and many never go outside, especially during these times of the pandemic. This probably contributes to the fact that Generation Z is recorded the most mentally ill generation.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Practice Gratitude for Earth
Kathleen Dean Moore says that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation. Do you agree? How can we cultivate a sense of gratitude as individuals, and as a society?

    Alaina Rogers's avatar
    Alaina Rogers 4/21/2021 8:18 AM
I completely agree. Gratitude is definitely a factor of moral obligation. As individuals, we can make sure to share gratitude for the Earth by doing simple tasks such as picking up litter or using metal straws. As a society, we can come together in projects such as this one and work together as a community to save our planet.

I recently volunteered to help garden at a local church, because I realized that this way, not only would I benefit from the service hours, but nature would as well. I used to volunteer weekly at a recreational nature program, but when I moved here, I was not able to anymore. I was glad to fraternize with nature again; I missed the flowers and plants.

Waste Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Alaina Rogers's avatar
    Alaina Rogers 4/17/2021 10:21 AM
A way to express personality, creativity, and values that don't require buying more clothes and accessories are using what one already has to create things. In addition, even though wearing hand-me-down clothing items is sometimes frowned upon, borrowing clothes from someone else would help an individual avoid shopping for new items that may already be accessible. Especially as the "vintage" style is popular at the moment, it would be cheaper and more authentic for someone to wear old clothes that are already owned than to buy newly created, retro clothing items.

Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

    Alaina Rogers's avatar
    Alaina Rogers 4/17/2021 10:03 AM
When walking instead of driving, I feel more connected spiritually and emotionally. I love to hear the sounds of nature when I walk and notice  small details that I am usually in too much of a hurry to notice when driving.

    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

    Alaina Rogers's avatar
    Alaina Rogers 4/17/2021 9:53 AM
I am finally getting a substantial amount of sleep, between 8 to 10 hours every night. I have realized that I am now less anxious than before and do not wake up with morning sickness every day as I used to. My sleep schedule used to be very spontaneous and unorganized, and I am glad that I have improved it.

How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Alaina Rogers's avatar
    Alaina Rogers 4/17/2021 9:45 AM
There are many ways to incorporate personal values into your exercise routine. To spend quality time with friends while exercising, you can schedule times to meet up and exercise together. Another way would be to challenge each other to see how much exercise each person can get in. With nature, you can always take a hiking trail instead of walking in a neighborhood. You can also choose to run outside instead of using the treadmill. These are only some of the many things you can do.

A few days ago, I hiked the 2.9 mile White Rocks Trail in Boiling Springs, which is known for its wildflowers. I really enjoyed climbing the rocks and hiking with my dog. The view was great from up high, but if the sky was not clear, it would have been harder to see because the trees block a lot of the view. I accidentally went off the trail and saw a snake (it was not poisonous), but when I found my way back, I was totally fine. It was a fun adventure out in nature, and I definitely recommend the trail as long as you make sure to follow the blue markers :)
