In your opinion, how do social inequalities diminish a strong sense of community?

I think structural social inequities drive deeper wedges in communities because they tend to be cyclical. Laws and policies contribute to expanding the wealth gap, gender pay gap, racial economic disparities, gentrification, and many other issues that create or advance inequality. As these divides become more prominent, it can create a sense of "otherness," which can make people cling to only those within their particular socioeconomic status and identity.  It hurts our communal pursuit of social, racial, economic, and environmental justice if we have a distorted view of our 'community,' reinforced by structures in place.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Community Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
A recent Keen Independent Research Foundation study found that Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you work to address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?

I think that supporting businesses owned by BIPOC is vital to addressing systemic racism; support, I believe, can be not just financial but also through promotion and advocacy.

    Transportation Go by Bike
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking, or driving?

Biking has helped inform me of key landmarks in my community, which draws my interest in learning more. I bike more for exercise than commute, so my engagement with others is very limited. However, I'm gaining a better directional sense and uncovering uncharted areas for future activities and engagement.

What is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?

Right now I'm working with Project SHARE, a non-profit food bank in Carlisle, to organize a food truck fundraising event. Proceeds to SHARE will be directed towards sourcing adequate nourishment for those living below the poverty line or who are food insecure in Carlisle. I can continue partnering with SHARE efforts and make the community more sustainable by providing freshly-sourced food options, helping to nourish the community, and providing a positive atmosphere for clients and fellow volunteers alike.
