  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Support Local Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    Elizabeth Blymire's avatar
    Elizabeth Blymire 4/21/2021 9:55 AM
Pollinators help our crops grow, which is essential to our health.  Pollinators also help trees grow, which is extremely important for air quality and the reductions in carbon dioxide.  In addition, ecosystems would become less resilient due to biodiversity losses, increases in invasive species, and reductions in crops and natural vegetation.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Support Pollution Reduction
What environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?

    Elizabeth Blymire's avatar
    Elizabeth Blymire 4/21/2021 9:49 AM
The major thing in Carlisle would be the air pollution due to the highways and farming close to us, which can cause respiratory infections, heart disease, and lung cancer.  The effects can be from short or long term exposure.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Who is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?

    Elizabeth Blymire's avatar
    Elizabeth Blymire 4/20/2021 9:29 AM
Those who are most affected are usually minorities of color.  There are serious health risks that come from this, such as serious COVID-19 illness, cancer, asthma, and lead poisoning.  Those who are usually irresponsible in our community are those who are Caucasian.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Research Restorative Justice
How can Restorative Justice help foster the well-being of both people and planet?

    Elizabeth Blymire's avatar
    Elizabeth Blymire 4/20/2021 9:19 AM
Learning about Restorative Justice will help us, as a society, better understand the impacts of climate change in our communities.  While we may know what climate change does globally, we don't really pay attention what happens locally.  Better understanding these impacts will help us take care of our local communities and contribute to a global response.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Buy From a Farmers Market
What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

    Elizabeth Blymire's avatar

I live in an area that doesn’t have any farmers markets close by, but there are still fresh produce stands. My family and I used to go to those all the time, but we haven’t in a while. We could possibly go to those stands more often instead of farmers markets when we don’t have the time to drive farther. Also, when we do go to farmers markets, we can buy all of our produce there instead of at the grocery store. It would help support local farmers; plus, we would be buying produce we know is purely fresh.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
How does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?

    Elizabeth Blymire's avatar

I watched a documentary called "A Place at the Table" from 2013 that basically showed how anyone can be affected by hunger or food shortages in America. The documentary also showed the physical and mental struggles of food deserts and hunger on parents and children. One of these families were farmers, but they didn't have enough money to afford food themselves, let alone distribute it, because everyone went to the grocery store to buy their food. This is taking a huge hit to farmers and local markets because they aren't given the attention they need in order to properly thrive.

Today is a bit of a chilly one, so I don't think I'll get much more time outside besides my walk. I'm still feeling good about my progress so far.  I've been getting more sleep, which has been beneficial to more overall mood. I've also been feeling more energized after working-out.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

It helps me stay motivated and focus more clearly after I take a walk to clear my mind.

I think it's hilarious how I was looking forward to going outside today, but then the weather decided to be cold.  Welcome to April.  Hope everyone's first day went well!
